Exterior Work Built for Everson's Climate

Everson sits in the Nooksack River valley in Whatcom County, close enough to the Puget Sound weather systems that homes here deal with a long, wet season every year. Moisture rolls in off the water and gets pushed up against the foothills, which means more days of driving rain, more humidity that never quite clears out, and more time each year when north-facing walls, fence lines, and rooflines stay damp enough for moss and algae to take hold. It's the same weather pattern that shapes exterior work all across Whatcom County, and it's a big part of why we're careful about what we put on the outside of a house.

None of this is unique to any one street or neighborhood in Everson — it's a valley-wide reality. But it does mean the materials and installation details matter more here than they would in a drier climate. Siding that's marginal in a dry region can fail early in a place like this. That's the standard we build to.

Why We Install Only James Hardie Fiber Cement

We made a decision a while back to stop installing several products that are common in this market — vinyl, LP SmartSide, primed wood, and fiber cement alternatives like Cemplank or Allura. We still get asked about them, so here's the honest version of why we don't put them on Everson homes anymore.

  • Vinyl siding is inexpensive and low-maintenance in mild weather, but it's a petroleum-based product that expands, contracts, and can warp or crack in temperature swings, and it's not doing this region's moss and mildew problem any favors — moisture tends to sit behind and around loose-fitting panels rather than shed away from the wall.
  • LP SmartSide is an engineered wood product with a real following, and it performs reasonably well when installation and caulking are kept up on schedule. The trade-off is that it's still wood at its core — it depends on an intact factory coating and diligent homeowner maintenance to keep moisture out at cut edges and seams, which is a tall order in a climate this wet, this often.
  • Cemplank and Allura are fiber cement products, similar in concept to what we install, but we've standardized on one manufacturer, one factory finish system, and one warranty structure rather than mixing suppliers. Consistency matters when we're asking a product to hold up for decades in this climate.
  • Primed spruce or cedar siding looks great on day one, but bare wood siding is a maintenance commitment — regular repainting, caulk checks, and vigilance about moss and rot — that most homeowners underestimate until the first few damp winters have passed.

James Hardie fiber cement is what we settled on instead. It's non-combustible, dimensionally stable, and comes from the factory with a ColorPlus finish that's baked on rather than field-painted — which matters a lot when a house is going to spend half the year wet. Hardie also builds specific product lines engineered for different climate zones, and the HZ5 line is the one suited to the kind of freeze-thaw, high-moisture conditions we get in Whatcom County. Backed by a strong transferable warranty, it's the product we're comfortable standing behind on an Everson home for the long haul.

What We Do Beyond Siding

Siding is our core focus, but exterior systems work together, and we handle roofing, windows, and decks as well. A roof that's shedding water properly, windows that are sealed and flashed correctly, and siding that's installed to spec all depend on each other — a gap in one usually shows up as a problem in another within a few wet seasons. When we're on an Everson property, we're looking at the whole exterior, not just one component of it.

What Correct Installation Looks Like

Fiber cement siding is only as good as its installation. Proper flashing at windows and doors, correct fastener placement, adequate clearance from grade and hardscaping, and attention to butt joints and caulking are what separate a system that lasts decades from one that lets moisture in behind the wall. This is where a lot of siding jobs — regardless of brand — go wrong. We treat installation detail as seriously as the material choice itself.

Dealing with Moss and Algae

No siding product is immune to moss and algae in a climate like this — it's a function of shade, moisture, and how long a surface stays wet, not just the material. What changes with Hardie is how the surface holds up to the cleaning and upkeep needed to manage it: a factory-baked finish tolerates routine washing far better than field paint or bare wood, so keeping a home looking good over the years is less of a battle.

Why a Local Crew Matters

Working in Whatcom County day in and day out means we're not guessing at how a wall assembly will hold up here — we've seen what the wet season does to different products and installation approaches over time. That local experience shapes the decisions we make on every job, from product selection down to flashing details, and it's part of why homeowners in Everson and the surrounding area choose to work with a crew that's actually local rather than a company passing through.
