Exterior Work Built for Sumas and Lynden

Sumas sits at the north edge of Whatcom County, tucked against the Fraser Valley and the Canadian border, just a short drive from Lynden. It's farm country and small-town streets, with homes that range from older farmhouses to newer builds spread across open, exposed lots. Whatever the age of the house, the exterior takes a beating from the same regional weather that hits all of Whatcom County: damp air carried in off the Salish Sea, driving rain that comes in sideways more often than straight down, and a long, gray moss season that can run from fall clear through spring.

We're a Lynden-based crew, and Sumas is well within our regular service area. We're not driving in from Seattle or subcontracting the work out — the same local team that shows up for an estimate is the one doing the install.

What This Climate Does to Siding

Northwest Washington doesn't get brutal winters, but it makes up for that with persistence. Homes here deal with:

  • Constant moisture exposure. Long stretches of drizzle and fog keep siding damp for days at a time, which is hard on any material that isn't built to shed water and dry out quickly.
  • Wind-driven rain. Open, rural lots around Sumas don't have much to break the wind, so rain gets pushed into seams, laps, and trim joints instead of just running down the face of the wall.
  • Moss and algae growth. Shaded north walls and anything under trees stay wet longer, and that's exactly where moss and mildew take hold on siding that can't handle sustained moisture.
  • Salt-laced air. Proximity to Puget Sound means airborne salt is part of the regional mix, which accelerates wear on paint, caulk, and fasteners over time.

None of this is dramatic, storm-of-the-century stuff. It's slow, cumulative wear — the kind that shows up as peeling paint, soft spots, and swollen edges five or ten years down the road if the siding wasn't suited to the job in the first place.

Why We Only Install James Hardie Siding

We made a decision as a company to install James Hardie fiber cement siding exclusively — not vinyl, not LP SmartSide, not primed wood, not cedar. That's not a marketing angle; it's a practical response to exactly the climate described above.

Fiber cement doesn't absorb water the way wood-based products can, so it doesn't swell, delaminate, or rot when it stays damp for days on end. It's also non-combustible, which matters more each year as wildfire smoke and dry-season risk become part of life in Washington. James Hardie's HZ5 product line is engineered specifically for the freeze-thaw, wet-winter climate found here in the Pacific Northwest, and the factory-applied ColorPlus finish holds color and resists moss and mildew far better than field-applied paint on wood siding.

We're not going to tell you every other product is junk — vinyl and engineered wood have their place, and plenty of homes around Whatcom County have them. But we've seen what this specific climate does to siding over a 10-, 15-, 20-year span, and we'd rather install one product we trust completely than several we have reservations about. Hardie's transferable warranty and track record in wet marine climates are a big part of why we stopped installing anything else.

Beyond Siding

Siding is only part of what protects a house here. We also handle roofing, windows, and decks, and on most Sumas and Lynden homes those systems work together — a roof that's shedding water properly, gutters that carry it away from the wall assembly, and siding that can handle the moisture that still gets through. If we're out for a siding estimate and notice a roofing or window issue that's feeding a moisture problem, we'll point it out. We'd rather flag it now than have you deal with hidden damage later.

What a Local Crew Means for You

  • We know how Sumas and Lynden properties are laid out — open, exposed lots, older farmhouses, mixed tree cover — and we plan the job around that.
  • We're close enough to check on a project without it becoming a special trip.
  • If something needs a warranty follow-up years later, we're still local and still reachable.

Get an Honest Look at Your Home

Every property is different, and the right approach for a shaded, tree-lined lot isn't the same as one for an open field near the border. We'll give you a straight assessment and a free, no-pressure estimate — no hard sell, just an honest read on what your siding, roof, windows, or deck actually need.
